Hiring a PI

Licensed and Insured

Although the State of Tennessee does not require licensed investigators to maintain liability insurance, we have chosen to obtain an umbrella policy. This serves as an added layer of protection for us and for our clients. Whether you choose to work with us or another Private Investigation firm, we encourage you to make sure they are insured.

Any Private Investigator you contract with should be licensed and in good standing with the state. In Tennessee, a Private Investigator license can be verified by visiting the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance at the following website: https://verify.tn.gov/. This allows you to search by name, license number, or license type.

Contracts

The contract for services or retainer agreement serves both the Private Investigator and the client as protection in the event of a dispute. It also helps to avoid other problems such as misunderstandings, refunds, complaints, etc.

The contract agreement serves to define goals and expectations. It is rare for people to use the services of a Private Investigator more than once in their lifetime, and there are many common misconceptions of what an investigation will involve. A good investigation may achieve significant results, but they may not be the outcome for which the client had hoped. A properly executed contract helps to avoid unrealistic expectations, and clearly defines the objectives of the investigation.

Another good reason for a well-defined contract is that it establishes transparency. The payment terms and fee schedule are agreed upon, as well as the number of investigative hours to which the client has agreed.

Associations

Many Private Investigators are also members of an association which can make recommendations based on a client’s specific needs. As members of an association, Private Investigators typically sign a Code of Ethics, which further guarantees they will act in the best interests of their clients, and in full compliance with the law.

Consider whether a Private Investigator has an emphasis or a specialty that caters to your specific case.

If you have an attorney, please consult with them about this decision. If they agree it is a good idea, they should be the one to contact us for assistance with the case.
